Christian Values in SRE (Sex and Relationship Education)
Dynamic and relevant, ‘evaluate’ presentations bring Christian values into today’s youth culture in a non-threatening, ‘non-preachy’ way. This programme has at its heart the underlying belief that every young person is a unique and valuable individual, capable of making and maintaining healthy choices if suitably equipped and supported. Cultivating a healthy sense of self-worth, without which wise decisions are unlikely to be made, is an important focus.
'This Is Your Life!' for Years 7 and 8 (age 11-13) focuses on their worth as unique and special individuals. Covering a wide range of choices, this presentation encourages them to evaluate what they see and hear on television and in the movies, and aims to build their self-esteem. Delivered to large audiences of up to 150 students, 'This Is Your Life!' makes use of role play, group work and teaches assertiveness skills. The effect of drugs and alcohol on decision making is explored and technical information on these issues is also given. Qualities of friendship are considered and a lively quiz revisits and consolidates information given throughout the presentation.
’Sex:\HowSafe?’ for Years 9 and 10 (age 13-15) and ‘Just The One!’ for Years 11, 12 and 13 (age 15-18) build further layers of information. By discussion in small groups they aim to enable students to examine the nature of lasting relationships, commitment, trust and faithfulness. Media pressures are examined and the messages behind popular music, magazines and advertising are explored as well as considering risk taking behaviour.
The UK is notorious for having the highest rates of both unintended teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections in Europe.
‘evaluate’ educators are volunteers who have a heart for young people and a desire to change the sexual climate prevalent today. The evaluate programme enables educators to act as salt and light in schools. The vision is to impact thousands of young people throughout England, Scotland and Wales by challenging attitudes and values, imparting knowledge and skills, and empowering them to make healthy choices. We aim to make a real and lasting difference.
For training dates see ‘Get Involved’ on the evaluate website.
Christians can make a huge difference by exercising a voice in society, and it is vital to offer a better way for our young people. Much of sex and relationship work in schools is an attempt to minimise harm by encouraging the use of contraception. Although some will choose the route of safer sex, CARE believes that by affirming the choice to remain sexually inactive, ideally until marriage, many will choose to wait. For those who have already lost their virginity, this education will encourage a fresh start or secondary virginity. This will show the value of giving (rather than losing) what is a very precious gift and the most intimate part of our humanity within a loving and committed relationship.
“Go into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society. Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God.”
(Philippians 2:15 The Message)
